Intergenerational Trauma Therapy
The past is lived in the present.
Maybe you've noticed it in the moment your child melts down and your body reacts before your mind even catches up. Maybe it's the words that fly out of your mouth that sound uncomfortably like your own parents. Or maybe it's just a quiet, nagging fear: what if I pass this down, too?
If any of that sounds familiar, you're not failing. There's a reason this feels hard — and healing is possible.
What Is Intergenerational Trauma?
Intergenerational trauma is the ripple effect of pain, stress, and unmet needs that travels from one generation to the next. It's not always dramatic. Sometimes it looks like a family that never talked about feelings, a parent who was doing their best with too little support, or a childhood where love was real but so was fear.
You inherited more than your grandmother's eyes or your dad's sense of humor. You may have also inherited nervous system patterns, beliefs about what love and safety look like, and coping strategies that made sense once but don't serve you now.
Here's the part we want you to hold onto: Understanding where your patterns came from doesn't let anyone off the hook — including you. What it does is give you a place to actually start.
HOW WE HELP
Think of it like tending a garden. You can trim the weeds at the surface over and over, but they keep growing back until you get down to the root. That's the work we do together — not to dig up pain for its own sake, but to make room for something new to grow.
In our work together, we may draw on:
EMDR to help your nervous system process memories that are still running the show in the background.
Brainspotting to access and release what's stored below conscious awareness.
We'll go at a pace that respects your nervous system, not just your calendar. Healing isn't linear, and we won't pretend otherwise.
Who This Work Is For
This is a good fit if you're a parent who:
Feels overwhelmed by the demands of parenting more often than you'd like to admit
Is afraid of repeating patterns from your own childhood, even in small ways
Wonders whether your reactions are really about your child, or about something older
Wants to understand why certain moments hit so hard, not just white-knuckle through them
Is hopeful — even a little — that healing your history could change your family's trajectory
You don't need a dramatic backstory to belong here. Plenty of the parents we work with had "fine" childhoods that still left them anxious, reactive, or unsure how to be the parent they want to be. That counts, too.
Frequently Asked Questions
Here’s what you might be wondering about
-
Intergenerational trauma therapy helps parents identify and heal patterns of pain, stress, and coping behaviors passed down from earlier generations, so those patterns stop shaping how they parent today. At Conscious Roots Counseling, this work combines approaches like EMDR, Brainspotting, and Healing Our Core Issues with honest, supportive conversation.
-
Common signs include reacting to your child's behavior more intensely than the moment seems to call for, repeating parenting patterns you swore you'd avoid, feeling anxious or on edge without a clear cause, and struggling to regulate emotions during conflict with your kids. These signs don't require a dramatic childhood to be valid.
-
No, trauma isn't a competition, and it doesn't have to look like a crisis to leave a mark. If certain moments with your kids bring up more reaction than the moment itself seems to warrant, that's worth exploring, regardless of what your childhood looked like on paper.
-
No, we focus on your past only as much as it helps explain your present. The goal is always to connect the dots in a way that helps you parent differently today, not to relive old pain for its own sake.
-
No, they're related but different. Parenting coaching focuses on tools and strategies for the here and now, while intergenerational trauma therapy looks at why those tools might not be landing and what's happening in your own nervous system when things get hard. Many parents benefit from both.
-
That's a normal part of the process, and it's exactly why you don't do it alone. We move at a pace your nervous system can handle and check in often about what feels manageable versus what feels like too much, too fast.
-
There's no universal timeline, since it depends on your history, your goals, and what feels supportive along the way. Some parents notice shifts within a matter of weeks, while deeper patterns often take longer to unwind.
