<image:caption>EMDR and BSP help individuals access their inner brain to process experiences. The inner brain - or limbic system - is where memories, emotions, and automatic responses (fight, flight, freeze) are stored. Deep healing can occur when therapy focuses on treating the inner brain.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Why Intensive Therapy Sessions Make More Sense for EMDR and Brainspotting Than Regular Talk Therapy - Talk Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) are working on the cerebral cortex part of the brain (AKA the outer brain). This part of the brain processes language, logic, problem solving, etc. This is appropriate for situations that are easily solved by changing thinking patterns, using boundaries in relationships, applying coping skills, etc.</image:title>

<image:caption>EMDR and BSP help activate the limbic system. Our limbic system (AKA the inner brain) is where memories, emotions, and automatic responses (Fight, Flight, Freeze) are stored. If our emotional, behavioral, and/or mental symptoms are because of past experiences we need to treat the inner brain. No amount of CBT is going to get to the root of the problem.</image:caption>

By being with the client and providing cues of safety and connection, the therapist is able to help the client process their big feelings and behaviors to facilitate growth, change, and integration.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Movement is great to reduce stress. I’m not talking about starting to train for a marathon or join a gym. Turn on some music and dance in your bedroom. Yoga with Adriene is a great resource for starting yoga (and free on Youtube!). Go for a walk around the neighborhood with your kids or dog. Any movement of your body that you enjoy is what matters!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - How to Care for Your Mental Health While Caring About Politics - Let’s practice what we preach. Being kind to everyone. Kill them with kindness. If we are kind - even while disagreeing - there is less for them to get defensive about. Kindness is more likely to change another person’s perspective. Attack is more likely to keep that other person from changing. If you want more about how to have a conversation with someone you disagree with politically, I recommend you take a look at University of Texas at Austin Center for Media Engagement’s suggestions.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Three Tips to Consider Implementing as a Parent Right Now to Support Yourself and Your Child - One thing that I like to tell all the parents that I work with is that every relationship is based on rupture and repair. There are going to be ample amounts of times where you won’t get it right, you won’t follow the information that you saw last night on Instagram, and you won’t always be regulated to respond in the “just right” way. There are going to be times when you lose your cool and that is okay!</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Managing Mental Health with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) - I recently (not by choice) changed health insurances which resulted in the denial of coverage for several of my prescriptions, hours of internet searches, and phone calls to the insurance company, supply manufacturers, pharmacists and doctors. All told, my family pays an extraordinary amount of money for treatment, with insurance. The cost (multiplied by two since there are two of us in the household with the disease) includes specialist doctor visits every three months, blood draws to ensure our organs and body systems are functioning as normal, insulin, a device for administering the insulin such as an insulin pump or insulin pen, needles for the pens, a device to determine blood sugar and several more items.</image:title>
<image:caption>These aren’t one-time costs. They are monthly costs that never end. The equivalent is a yearly college tuition.</image:caption>

This may include booking a flight, driving to the airport a few times, walking into the airport and browsing the flight schedules. It may include starting off small with a direct and short flight before moving on to a longer flight with layovers.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What Can I Expect in My First Therapy Session? - If the client is an adolescent/teen, we usually give the client the option of meeting with the therapist alone and/or with parents. We can even split up the session to be a combination of just the parents, just the client, or everyone together. Whatever works best for them. With adults, the first session is reviewing the questionnaires and asking questions to clarify information. Again, we’re determining what diagnosis fits best.</image:title>
<image:caption>You can expect your therapist to either take notes using a computer/laptop or writing on a notepad. We’re not writing every detail and we’re not “analyzing” anything. We are simply writing your answers to questions. After the session a therapist must write a summary or assessment and writing/typing notes helps therapists remember your responses.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - How to Set Good New Year’s Resolutions - It’s time for New Year's Resolutions. Are you planning to be healthier? Follow a budget? Spend less time doom scrolling? These types of resolutions are…fine. We have good intentions setting these types of goals. However, most people give up on New Year's Resolutions quickly. Part of the issue is the goals are too big and not specific enough.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - How to Set Good New Year’s Resolutions - When I am working with my therapy clients, I often use the metaphor of a staircase with goals. Maybe your goal is to ideally exercise 4 days per week. Using the staircase metaphor, the top stair is 4 days, the first step is 1 day. And 2 or 3 days are in between. Even if you exercise 1 day per week, you still went up one step towards your goal, and it is still better than not exercising any day that week. When we have ranges for goals, we are less likely to give up on them, because 1 day is better than 0 days and you can try for 4 days another week.</image:title>

      <image:title>Blog - National Say Something Nice Day…To Your Child!</image:title>
<image:caption>The busyness of everyday life creates challenges in regards to providing positive and sometimes even simple connection with others. This can easily pertain to the connection that parents have with their children. With an endless “To Do” list and juggling the roles of chef, nanny, maid, taxi driver, and many more, it seems nearly impossible to focus on the positive things your child is doing. You may think to yourself, “well she/he knows what’s expected.” Therefore, your child may not be acknowledged or recognized for the positive behavior she/he is displaying because it is expected. However, when your child is Picasso on the living room wall with a permanent marker, it is a different story. Most likely, that is a situation that is not overlooked and your child receives negative attention for an undesirable behavior. Has your child learned that the best way to get your attention is through the performance of these undesirable behaviors?</image:caption>

For me, self-care means journaling, taking a long walk in the woods, dancing to music, making homemade hummus, painting rocks or calling a friend. Get to know yourself and what brings you a sense of peace and calm.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Why Your Therapist Does Not Accept Your Insurance Anymore - Conscious Roots Counseling came to be when I decided to change the practice’s business from mostly insurance-based to self-pay. This decision snow-balled into renaming and rebranding and blogging and….you don’t care. You just want to know why your therapist is mean and expects you to pay more when you could see a different therapist that accepts your insurance.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Why Your Therapist Does Not Accept Your Insurance Anymore - Allie is a mental health counselor. She has been in the field for 10 years, has extensive education beyond graduate school and is a specialist in her niche. Her continued education and training is expensive and time consuming, but Allie values it as it helps her be the best therapist for her clients. Allie estimates that to cover the cost of her business and continued training in her speciality, she needs to charge $150 per session. (If you want to know how therapists calculate their sessions costs, see our blog Why Does Therapy Cost So Much)</image:title>
<image:caption>Insurance Company ABC has decided that any therapist that sends a claim with the billing code for a 60-minute session will be paid $85. This is called a “negotiated rate,” but there is no negotiating, it is whatever the insurance company decides it is. The client has a $25 copay and pays Allie the $25. ABC sends a check for $60. That leaves a $65 difference. Allie does not get that $65 from anyone. It is “adjusted” and Allie gets $85, not the $150 her time is worth.</image:caption>
